Breakthrough Development in Technology to Restore Vision to the Blind

Andrea Macdonald founder of ideaXme interviews Professor Pieter Roelfsema Director of Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience. In this interview they talk of new research published on 3 December 2020 which reveals a breakthrough towards restoring a rudimentary form of vision in the blind using a brain implant to make the blind see again. Authors are: Xing Chen, Feng Wang, Eduardo Fernandez, Pieter R. Roelfsema.

This research lays the foundations for a neuro-prosthetic device that could allow blind people to regain functional vision in the future.

Challenges that remain in advancing this technology further:

Andrea Macdonald and Dr Pieter Roelfsema also discuss the challenges that remain in reaching the stage whereby these prosthetics are available for use in humans.

Professor Roelfsema:

Professor Roelfsema is the director of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, where he leads the Vision and Cognition group. Research of this group is directed at understanding the cortical mechanisms of visual perception, memory and plasticity.

The paper: Shape perception via a high-channel-count neuroprosthesis in monkey visual cortex.
Xing Chen1,*, Feng Wang1, Eduardo Fernandez2, Pieter R. Roelfsema1,3,4,* 04 Dec 2020: Vol. 370, Issue 6521, pp. 1191-1196 DOI: 10.1126/science.abd7435.

Abstract from the paper: https://science.sciencemag.org/content/370/6521/1191: Shape perception via a high-channel-count neuroprosthesis in monkey visual cortex.

Work in this area of stimulating the brain to receive visual perception dates back to the 1970s. However, it was limited by only being able to deliver a small number of artificial 'pixels' at a time. At the NIN, Pieter Roelfsema's team are now using new implant production and implantation technologies, cutting-edge materials engineering, microchip fabrication, and microelectronics, to develop devices that are more stable and durable than previous implants.

Electrical stimulation:

When electrical stimulation is delivered to the brain via an implanted electrode, it generates the percept of a dot of light at a particular location in visual space, known as a 'phosphene.'

Perception of seeing: Recognising dots, lines and letters:

The implant interfaces directly with the brain, bypassing prior stages of visual processing via the eye or the optic nerve.

EBRAINS' 3D brain atlas:

Both Professor Roelfsema and Andrea Macdonald also discuss how EBRAINS 3D brain atlas has made this research possible. @HumanBrainProject is transitioning into becoming eBrains. EBRAINS provides digital tools and services which can be used to address challenges in brain research and brain-inspired technology development. Its components are designed with, by, and for researchers. The tools assist scientists to collect, analyse, share, and integrate brain data, and to perform modelling and simulation of brain function.
